Features
Starts with post holes
Fence and deck posts are the most common bag job, so a round hole with four posts is the starting point.

Bag yields and coverage
| Bag | Yield | Bags per cubic yard | Covers at 4 in thick |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 lb | 0.6 cu ft | 45 | 1.8 sq ft |
| 60 lb | 0.45 cu ft | 60 | 1.35 sq ft |
| 50 lb | 0.375 cu ft | 72 | 1.13 sq ft |
| 40 lb | 0.3 cu ft | 90 | 0.9 sq ft |
Yields are for standard concrete mix as printed on common US bags. Always check your bag: high-strength and fast-setting mixes vary.
Post holes: concrete per hole
| Hole diameter | 2 ft deep (80 lb bags) | 3 ft deep (80 lb bags) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 in | 0.39 cu ft · 0.7 bags | 0.59 cu ft · 1 bags |
| 8 in | 0.7 cu ft · 1.2 bags | 1.05 cu ft · 1.7 bags |
| 10 in | 1.09 cu ft · 1.8 bags | 1.64 cu ft · 2.7 bags |
| 12 in | 1.57 cu ft · 2.6 bags | 2.36 cu ft · 3.9 bags |
Round the total up for the whole job, not hole by hole: ten 10-inch holes 3 feet deep need about 28 bags, not 30. A common rule of thumb is a hole about three times the width of the post. How deep to dig depends on the post height and your frost line, so check local guidance.
Buying and handling bags
An 80 lb bag is heavy to lift, and a car load adds up fast: 20 bags weigh 1,600 lb. Check your vehicle's payload before loading, or ask about delivery. Keep bags dry and off the ground, because damp mix starts to set in the bag. Mix with the amount of water printed on the bag: extra water makes concrete easier to pour but weaker.

Frequently asked questions
How many bags of concrete do I need for a fence post?
A hole 10 inches across and 3 feet deep holds about 1.64 cubic feet, so it takes about 2.7 bags of 80 lb mix, or 3 bags in practice. The post itself takes up a little room, which acts as your margin.
How many 80 lb bags are in a yard of concrete?
About 45. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and an 80 lb bag makes about 0.6 cubic feet. With 60 lb bags you need 60, and with 40 lb bags 90.
How much area does an 80 lb bag of concrete cover?
At 4 inches thick, one 80 lb bag covers about 1.8 square feet. At 2 inches thick it covers twice that. A 60 lb bag covers about 1.35 square feet at 4 inches.
Is it cheaper to buy 80 lb or 60 lb bags?
Usually the 80 lb bag is cheaper per cubic foot, but compare the shelf prices: divide each price by the bag yield (0.6 or 0.45 cubic feet). Smaller bags can be worth it if you are carrying them a long way.
Do fast-setting post mixes yield the same?
Not always. Fast-setting mixes often come in 50 lb bags, and their yield can differ from standard concrete mix. Check the yield printed on the bag and pick the closest size here.
